Night Rating

If you are interested in flying in the dark then a night rating is for you.


  • Hold a valid private pilot license
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Category 3 Medical

Course Requirements
Based on minimum Transport Canada requirements

  • Minimum 20 hours flight time
    • 13 hours dual instruction including:
      • 2 hours cross country
      • 10 hours instrument (5 hours will already have been obtained during Private Pilot training)
    • 5 hours solo
  • 1 hour ground school

Length of Course

The night rating can take anywhere between 1-4 weeks to complete depending on whether the student is full-time or part-time.

Privileges and Limitations

  • The holder of a Commercial Pilot License may operate any Canadian registered single engine non-high performance aircraft during the night in VFR conditions
  • Cannot be endorsed on a Recreational Pilot Permit
