When can I start my flight training?
Right now! The flight training program is completely flexible which allows you to begin at any time. There are two portions to becoming a Private Pilot (PPL), the ground school portion, and the fun part, flying! After each, there will be an exam administered by Transport Canada (a written exam for the ground school, and a flight test for the flying). We recommend going for a flight before you hit the books for the ground school. This will help motivate you to study, and make sure you really enjoy flying.
What do I need to do to become a Private Pilot?
This is a great question. There are lots of requirements that you’ll have to meet based on Transport Canada’s regulations. We’ll help you understand these requirements fully once you start your training, but the overall requirements include studying and flying. It doesn’t matter what order you complete these in (most do both at the same time). You’ll need to complete the Ground School course, then a written exam administered through Transport Canada. You’ll also need to complete a minimum of 45 flight hours. These hours will be broken down into dual hours with your instructor, as well as solo hours all by yourself. Then, you’ll complete a flight test, also administered through Transport Canada.
Do you have a ground school program?
You bet we do. We start a new ground school course about every 3 months. Classes are right on site at our hangar, and run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. You’ll need some textbooks for the ground school, which we have available for purchase as well.
If I missed the start date for ground school, do I have to wait 3 months until the next course?
Absolutely not! The best part about ground school is that it doesn’t really matter which units you learn first. This means you can join in at any point in the course with relative ease. Whatever subjects covered before you registered can be learned in the next ground school course (typically begins a week or two after yours will end), which you can join for no additional charge.
When do I get to fly and control the aircraft?
Believe it or not, you can do lots of the flying on your very first lesson! You’ll do all of your flight training from the captain seat, with your instructor on your right. Of course, your instructor will be taking off and landing, and will be prepared to take over at any point if needed, but they’ll walk you through all the controls and let you try it all!
When can I fly the aircraft alone?
As soon as you and your instructor feel confident that you will be safe to fly alone. Typically, the first solo flight is one lap of the circuit (it usually only takes about 6 minutes), but you will NEVER forget those 6 minutes, ever.
What is the difference between a Private Pilot Licence (PPL), and the Commercial Private Licence (CPL)?
The PPL allows you to fly for fun. You can fly your own plane, or rent ours and fly your friends and family around. This is usually the first step people take, even if they want to become a Commercial Pilot. The CPL is what you’ll need if you ever want to work as a pilot. The overall course is very similar to the PPL in that you’ll complete a ground school course, a written exam, as well as additional flight training and another flight test. Here, you’ll learn to refine your skills even more, and learn a whole lot more about what it means to work commercially in the aviation industry.
Do you accept international students?
Of course! If you’d like to apply to our school, you can find our registration form on our website. If your application is approved and your registration fees are processed, we’ll send you an acceptance letter that can be submitted to the Canadian Government to assist you in getting a student visa. Once you are approved to study in Canada, you can begin your training at any point.
Do you have any accommodations if I don’t live nearby?
We have some great accommodations about 5 minutes from the airport. Prices are paid per week, and include access to a fitness area, common television area, internet, your own private room/bathroom/closet. Meals are not included, but there is a cafeteria on-site for easy access.
How much will it cost me to become a Private Pilot?
Because the training is a developed skill and includes a unique new wealth of knowledge, it’s difficult to give an exact price. Every student learns differently, and feels confident in their flying capabilities at different points. Our goal isn’t to rush you through the training in the absolute minimum amount of hours required, our goal is train you to be the best and the safest pilot you can be. That said, typically students complete their Private Pilot Licence somewhere between the $12,000 to $15,000 range.
